Resources for Practicing Confession

– Go through the Ten Commandments Exodus 20 and confess the areas you have fallen short
– Review the 7 deadly sins:pride, anger, lust, envy, greed, sloth, and gluttony. Confess the areas you have fallen short in this list.

We need to confess our sins in order to be healed and changed. That means..say them out loud.

When we practice confessing we are liberated from guilt. And we are less likely to sin in the same way in the future. Sin looks and feels less attractive when we confess it.

In our confession we have to take responsibility for what we did. We need to own up to the fact that our behavior wasn’t just the result of bad parenting, poor genetics, jealous siblings, etc Confession means saying that somewhere in the mix was a choice, and the choice was made by us, and it does not need to be excused, explained or even understood. The choice needs to be forgiven. The slate has to be wiped clean.

Then in confession we need to make restitution for what we did wrong. If we stole or cheated we need to pay back or take back. If we spoke deceit, we need to tell the truth. Its painful, but the training will heal the wounds.

Confession isn’t just about naming our sins, its about promising the future. We make a vow. We resolve that, with God’s help, we will change. This will involve setting up right where we did wrong. The level of our promise helps us know whether we are actually repenting or just attempting damage control. Is our desire to set things right, or merely to minimize painful consequences?
